Meet Phil Rodda from ArtsHub 118

Phil Rodda is a drummer, photographer, and storyteller who lives at the place where music and imagery meet. Best known as a member of the Alberta-based alt-rock band Medical Pilot, he brings a performer’s instinct to every moment he captures. Years behind the drum kit, from sweaty local shows to multi-city tours, taught him the rhythm of a live set, the emotional highs, and the quick flashes of magic that artists want remembered.

Phil’s shift from stage to camera happened naturally. He started by shooting behind-the-scenes moments with his own band, then quickly became someone other artists wanted to work with because he understands what is happening onstage. He knows the real moments to watch for, the quiet seconds before a big chorus hits, the chemistry between musicians, and the energy that flows between a band and the crowd.

Medical Pilot’s catalogue includes the 2017 Medical Pilot EP, the 2022 full-length Primary Colours, and 2024’s Halfway Home. Their mix of alt-rock, punk energy, and modern melodic grit has earned them a loyal following and regular play across Western Canada’s indie scene.

Today, Phil continues to perform and photograph across Canada, using his experience as both a musician and a visual storyteller to create images that feel honest, immersive, and alive.
