Arts Habitat Association Current Projects

Review of City Regulations - Art Of Living Recommendation #2:

The Project:
In 2008 the Edmonton Arts Council published The Art of Living a 10 Year Plan for Securing the Future of Arts and Heritage in the City of Edmonton.

Arts Habitat Association has been working with the City of Edmonton to address zoning and bylaw concerens to help stimulate arts activities within the City of Edmonton.

The working team includes City departments Community Services, Bylaw Unit, Licensing and Permits. Arts Habitat Association is acting as community partner.

The ultimate project goal is to find and implement solutions toward a more sympathetic regulatory environment that will catalyze, improve and increase opportunities for a broad range of arts activities and space uses in the City.

A review of zoning bylaws, definitions, licenses, permits and other civic regulations was the basis of the research into what regulatory inhibitors are impeding artists and arts organizations from thriving in Edmonton. The complete scope of work included:

The Quarters Project
Artists Urban Village and Arts Habitat Association have partnered with the City of Edmonton to create a new facility for artists and arts organizations as an integral part of the redevelopment of the east side of downtown Edmonton. Located at the corner of 102A Avenue and 96 Street in the Quarters Downtown only two blocks from the core of the arts district including the Citadel Theatre, the Winspear Centre, the Art Gallery of Alberta and one block from the proposed new LRT station. The City of Edmonton has identified this project as an ideal catalyst for the redevelopment of the Quarters Downtown.
