Plans for the redevelopment of the building into a community focused arts/arts friendly facility continue!

Arts Habitat Association and Arts on the Avenue have partnered to develop and manage the transformation of the Alberta Cycle Building on 118 Ave. into a community based multi-discipline arts facility.

THE OLD CYCLE BUILDING ON ALBERTA AVE IS BEING REVITALIZED! Alberta Avenue is a diverse neighbourhood poised at the forefront of arts & culture-led regeneration in our city and the former Alberta Cycle Building sits right in the middle of it. Arts Habitat Association in partnership with Arts on the Ave is working to transform this vacant building into a vibrant centre where arts and community meet to create and breathe new life onto the street. The building is ideal for this project and community. The improvement of the building will be a cornerstone in the revitalization efforts already underway, and will provide much needed space for the arts in Edmonton.

A PHASED DEVELOPMENT will keep the building active while long-range plans are underway. Initial renovations to bring the building up to health and safety codes will be complete early 2011. Arts Habitat with Arts on the Ave will then license space to artists and compatible organizations for short-term use until the project is ready to proceed with full renovations. This will animate the building on the Avenue, and as importantly, contribute to understanding how to program this multiuser arts facility.

SUMMER / FALL UPDATE 2011

Revitalization of the Old Cycle Building On Alberta Ave Continues!

Arts Habitat + Arts on the Ave along with the City of Edmonton, our Community Advisory Committee and consultants Shelterbelt Architecture are making significant progress towards our vision of an exciting community arts hub on 118 Avenue.

Work on the building has finally begun! Inside, old clutter and hazardous materials have been removed in preparation for construction this fall. Those renovations will include a new front entry, brand spanking new washrooms, complete new sprinkler and mechanical systems, and a clean "white box" interior. As many of you know, we can't meet the required number of parking spots on-site. We are currently working on a variance for that, and are optimistic for positive solutions.

Our improved space will be ready in the spring of 2012 - YAHOO!

Arts Habitat + Arts on the Ave are looking forward to providing great studio, performance, gallery, office, meeting, classroom, and rehearsal spaces to artists, cultural industries and social enterprises! This will be for short-term use until the future renovations for Phase 2.

Speaking of which … Our design team heard the excellent feedback you the community offered at our spring Design Charette, and is working to incorporate it into a complete design vision for the Phase 2 redevelopment. Stay posted for more on that!

Arts Habitat Association + Arts On the Ave thank the City of Edmonton for its ongoing commitment to the project through the building purchase and essential building code upgrades. We also thank the Government of Alberta and the Alberta Lottery Fund for their contribution through the Community Facility Enhancement Program for additional program-specific renovations.

In November 2009 Partners Arts Habitat Association and Arts on the Ave have completed an intensive consulting workshop with expert in the field of cultural rejuvenation Toronto Artscape CEO Tim Jones.  They continue successful discussions with the City to develop a long-term plan for the building use and rejuvenation.  At the same time they recognize that the building can and should be put to use in the interim.  Public information sessions are ongoing with community stakeholders. Look forward to new life in the building soon!
