City of Edmonton Resources:

Visit the 5th Floor Sustainable Planning Department. When considering renting or leasing a space for your use, we highly recommend you take the address, floor plan and site plan with you to the 5th floor and speak with a development advisor before you enter into an agreement. This precautionary step could provide you with important information to plan for your space needs and save you much agony further down the road.

The advisors will help determine if your use or activity is allowed on the site you are considering, how much parking you will need (extremely important in approving a development permit even if you think you don't need much parking) and what other building code upgrades will be required to fit out the space to suit your use.

The following resources found under the Bylaws and Licenses section on the City website will help you understand some of the steps you need to consider. Please peruse the site for other information that might be relevant to your project:

Arts-Related Uses :: City of Edmonton

Licences & Permits :: City of Edmonton

Permit Types :: City of Edmonton An explanation for each permit required when considering taking over and existing space, or building a new space for your use

Brochure Listing :: City of Edmonton A series of brochures outlining basic information you might need when considering a space for your use.

Business and Commercial :: City of Edmonton Depending on your activity, you might also need a business or commercial license.

  • Zoning Bylaw, 12800 :: City of Edmonton The Zoning Bylaw is the "go to" document for the planning department and is the ultimate resource of land uses, use (activity) definitions, parking requirements and more. It does not include building codes.
  • Planning Academy :: City of Edmonton "The Planning Academy" is a series of courses offered through the City of Edmonton geared to introduce Edmontonians to the planning and development process. Courses are offered every spring and fall.
  • Community Consultation in the Planning and Development Process "Community Consultation in the Planning and Development process" is an online document, produced by the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL), is a great resource to understand the community process involved when applying for a development that may require variances to be approved, and to ensure your community is involved throughout your development plans.
