ArtsHab is Edmonton's artist live/work residency, which for the past 10 years has been a vital part of Edmonton's downtown core. This dynamic community of artists has helped establish Edmonton as one of Canada's Cultural Capital cities.

ArtsHab houses 14 of some of Edmonton's finest local artists; from award winning writers, and internationally acclaimed professionals and top emerging artists.

Come and talk directly with the artists in their own studios. Along with stimulating conversations and paintings, drawings, works in clay and other art you can enjoy a glass of wine or a cold beverage, and sample some fine food items.

Artists in attendance include visual artists Tessa Nunn, Robert Scott, Harold Pearse, Jeff Collins, Lynn Malin, Arlene Wasylynchuk, Jenna Stanton, Robert Harpin, Aspen Harpin, Roger Garcia, Darren Woluschuk, Erika Ampudia, local filmmaker Ryan Brown, actor, singer and drummer Twilla MacLeod and Edmonton's own Writer in Exile Sheng Xue.

Lease update: Monday June 22, 2009

There has been a lot of talk lately about this incarnation of ArtsHab, known as ArtsHab Project 1. At the end of May, 2009 all of the renters received eviction notices for September 1, 2009 because lease negotiation had broken down. The renters are very happy to announce today that lease talks are on again and, while a new lease has yet to be signed, it looks very likely that a lease will be agreed to and ArtsHab Project 1 will continue to serve the artistic community of Edmonton in our present location for years to come.

The Arts Habitat Association of Edmonton is pleased to welcome Linda Huffman as the new Arts Habitat General Manager.

Linda will be working out of her temporary office in the Lower Gallery of the Alberta Craft Council at 10186-106 St in Edmonton, AB. She can be reached at Telephone: 780 932-3676 Email: lhuffman@artshab.com

Josée Aubin Ouellette and Mandy Espezel create literal forms out of formalist ideas. They are interested in creating images that function as a reality of their own as well as playing the literal character of paint. They both work to invest the material form of paint with meaning:

Espezel builds images that represent interactions and responses of individuals to their environments. Her paintings are developed through a process of automatic mark making and formal experimentation. Aubin Ouellette creates imaginary ecological illustrations that function as visual systems. In this series, paint is used in loose reference to the states of oil in the production process, playing with the image's relationship to scientific reality.
